Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción is the country’s capital, so is where the main business activities are developed. Whenever Juan José Gutiérrez Mayorga, chairman of CMI Alimentos, wants to take a break from the city, he goes to these places.

Amatitlán hot springs

In Amatitlán you will find resorts known for their pools and hot spring hot tubs. These waters are ideal to feel in a natural paradise, since they come from the underground layers of the Earth. 

Tourists and locals take advantage of this gift of nature without having to move far from the urban center. These sites also have activities for children, so it can also be a trip for the whole family.

Calderas Natural Park

This is a space where nature will be the main character in all the adventures you have during your visit. Ideal if you are looking for a place full of ecological areas and to connect with the landscapes of Guatemala.

Its main attraction may be the lagoon, which lends itself to activities like: surfing, rowing or diving. Around the lagoon there are several trails that you can walk and where you will discover more about the flora of the country. The best of all? The park is not that far from Guatemala City.

San Lucas Sacatepéquez

From viewpoints and ecological parks to typical markets and farms. San Lucas Sacatepéquez is one of the municipalities with the most tourist attractions near the capital. By visiting it you will get out of everyday life, since you can enjoy many outdoor activities.

To spend a different day, you can go to one of the typical markets. In San Lucas you can try the best of the Guatemala gastronomy, and you may want to visit one of its parks to get in harmony with nature.

Antigua Guatemala

Moving a few kilometers northwest of the City, you will have the opportunity to visit the iconic Antigua Guatemala. This colonial city is full of culture, history and gastronomy.

La Antigua is a town to get away from the capital without having to travel for many hours. You will be transported to the time of the Spanish colony thanks to its architecture. 

Lake Amatitlán

This is the fifth largest body of water in Guatemala and is surrounded by several municipalities adjacent to Guatemala City and Sacatepéquez. Here you can take a bike tour around the lake with family or friends. 

If you prefer, you can ride a horse, take some good photos and end the day at the viewpoint. If what you are looking for is to spend a day of relaxation with your favorite group, visit Lake Amatitlán and you will see how well they can have a good time. 

These places to visit near Guatemala City make you really want to put together a trip and stroll for a few hours. And the best part is that you don’t have to travel that far! 

For the past few years, the preservation of these natural areas has worried Guatemalans. The Gutierrez Bosch family are investing in ecological projects by virtue of the conservation of this type of natural space.
