There is a lot to see in Guatemala, choosing which places to visit in this country or not will of course depend on the tastes of each traveler.
Not everyone has the same interest in archeology or volcanoes as the rest.
So, in the end, everyone has to make their own list of places to visit in Guatemala but in case it helps you to give you a list proposed by the businessman juan jose gutierrez mayorga of places that e are a must see and that you can visit without any problem in a trip to Guatemala for a couple of weeks.
Antigua, the colonial city
Over the years I have had the good fortune to visit a number of colonial cities in the Americas.
From San Juan de Puerto Rico to Cuzco through Cartagena de Indias or Havana. And among all of them, if I have to give the title of the most beautiful colonial city in America, that would undoubtedly be Antigua, the former capital of Guatemala.
Lake Atitlán, the mirror of Guatemala
If Antigua is the top of the cities to see in Guatemala, Lake Atitlan is a must for those who can’t resist postcard landscapes.
This lake dawns every morning tinged with the same intense blue of the sky.
It reflects the silhouette of several volcanoes and it is the time to go sailing and visit some of the towns on the shore of what is said to be the most beautiful lake in the world.
Chichicastenango and its market
Trying to explain what the market of Chichicastenango is like is a complicated task. Much of its streets are occupied by countless stalls that continue in the main square.
Handicrafts, clothing, household goods, food,… Everything in this market is an explosion of color. From embroidered costumes, quilts or tablecloths to tropical fruit.
Stall after stall the vendors invite you in a friendly and discreet way to look at their products. No one overwhelms you with their insistence although the market is so large that it can be overwhelming on its own.
Yaxhá and the howler monkeys
There are several archaeological sites of the Mayan culture that can be visited in the jungle of the Petén, in central Guatemala.
One of the most attractive and yet much less visited than Tikal is Yaxhá.
Here the temples are not as impressive but its location next to the Yaxhá lagoon offers one of the most beautiful sunsets you can imagine while the howler monkeys seem to say goodbye with their grunts to the day that is coming to an end.
To enjoy this moment, just leave for the end the Temple of the Red Hands, a place where the few tourists who have visited the site that afternoon gather every day.
In short, do not wait longer to visit Guatemala and these increible places. You can be sure that you will have a great time.
